CHARLOTTE, North Carolina—March 29, 2019—In early 2017, Mavendog exploded onto the consulting scene touting a new, more specialized mode of project leadership. Today Mavendog is “one of Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest management consulting firms”, as recognized by the Charlotte Business Journal.

“It’s great recognition,” says Jon Vordermark, Mavendog’s President and Founder. “But the growth is no accident. Charlotte is our top market investment. The investment is paying off because local clients have embraced our brand and helped us establish deep roots in a very short time. As a young company, I am very grateful for that trust.”

Mavendog also attributes its growth to its new, interdependent service lines (or “Practice Areas”). Mavendog started as a Project Recovery company, but it has spent the last two years expanding into a full-service project leadership firm.

“We knew that Project Recovery was only a first step,” Vordermark continued. “Besides, many recovery efforts require expertise in market analysis, change enablement, and workforce development, not just the extrinsic matters of scope, schedule, and cost management. So expansion was necessary and inevitable. We have since expanded our offerings in those areas. And as a result, we are able to help clients lead portfolios, programs, and projects from beginning to end, not just recover the ones in jeopardy.”

And the Spec Ops of Project Management mantra? “The Charlotte market offers fertile ground to field test of our Spec Ops consulting model. The model is a key differentiator for us. For companies with acute issues or quick-hit needs, Mavendog provides a far more tactical consulting option, where clients have access to exceptional and versatile leaders at a lower overall cost. The model is unorthodox, but it liberates client buyers who feel stuck between two, unappealing binary choices — cheap staffing companies as the sole answer to budget constraints, or expensive, name-brand consulting companies as the sole source of premier talent.”

Mavendog’s military cause marketing has also gained them a lot of recognition. In 2018 Mavendog received the Above and Beyond Award from the Department of Defense ESGR (Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve) for North Carolina. The Above and Beyond award is presented by ESGR State Committees to recognize employers at the local level who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Mavendog is one of 50 organizations across North Carolina to receive the award. The recognition became a recruiting beacon for the company.

Overall, Mavendog has become a magnet for senior change and delivery leaders, and Charlotte companies are starting to recognize that fact.

And will Mavendog crack the top 10 on the list in the years ahead?

“I doubt it,” says Vordermark with a grin. Despite the growth, Vordermark wants Mavendog to maintain its boutique nature. “Mavendog is a specialist company, and the consultants and clients we attract want us to stay that way. No one, including me, wants us to be some large, unwieldy consulting company. We need to be a niche player to do what we do. We’ll leave the conventional needs to the conventional consulting firms. Besides, my crew likes the Spec Ops metaphor, expectation, and standard.”
