Bringing Intelligence to the Modern Battlefield
Confidential Global Defense Manufacturer
The Challenge
Imagine a weapon that knows when not to fire. A global defense manufacturer was developing next-generation, less-lethal weapons technology that combined intelligent cameras, real-time image processing, and embedded software to identify potentially dangerous shots. If the system detected a risk of striking someone's head, it could warn the operator and electronically prevent the weapon from firing.
But bringing this ambitious technology to life presented unique challenges. Integrating traditional weapons engineering with modern software development required navigating different development methodologies, evolving technical requirements, and coordination across multiple technology partners. Keeping these moving parts aligned was critical to advancing the initiative.
Mavendog's Role

Bringing Order to Mission-Critical Data
Confidential Global Industrial Manufacturer
The Challenge
When you're engineering critical components for military aircraft and defense systems, protecting sensitive technical information isn't just an IT concern. It's a business imperative.
A global industrial manufacturer specializing in precision-engineered components was working to strengthen data governance and prepare for the Department of War's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) requirements.
With sensitive engineering data residing across multiple systems, shared drives, spreadsheets, and paper files, the organization saw opportunities to improve data classification, streamline processes, and establish greater consistency in managing controlled unclassified information (CUI). Meeting these objectives required more than cybersecurity controls. It called for a coordinated approach to governing critical information across its operations.
Mavendog's Role
Mavendog led a data governance assessment and transformation planning initiative, using one of the manufacturer's operating divisions as a pilot for broader enterprise improvements. Rather than approaching the challenge as a standalone cybersecurity project, we examined how the organization classified, stored, accessed, managed, and governed sensitive information across its business and technology environments.
- Data Governance & CMMC Readiness Assessment: Mavendog evaluated existing data handling practices, governance maturity, engineering information repositories, and organizational responsibilities. Our assessment identified risks and gaps affecting the management of controlled unclassified information, establishing a foundation for improvements aligned with DFARS requirements and the organization's CMMC objectives.
- Federated Governance & Operating Model Design: Mavendog developed a practical approach to strengthening data governance without imposing an expensive, disruptive enterprise-wide overhaul. Using a non-invasive, federated governance model, we outlined how existing business practices could be formalized through clearer accountability, defined data stewardship responsibilities, and consistent governance processes across operating units.
- Data Classification, Discovery & Architecture Planning: The initiative addressed the challenges of identifying restricted information scattered across engineering applications, shared drives, spreadsheets, and physical records. Mavendog defined proposed initiatives for data taxonomy, classification, discovery, and technical architecture, including how sensitive information should be organized, accessed, retained, and protected.
- Governance Policies, Organizational Readiness & Change: Effective data governance required more than technical controls. Mavendog identified the organizational structures, policies, communications, training, and stewardship responsibilities necessary to establish consistent practices. The proposed approach emphasized practical adoption within existing business operations rather than creating an entirely separate governance bureaucracy.
- Prioritized Transformation Roadmap: Mavendog developed a sequenced roadmap of projects covering governance foundations, data discovery, classification, technical architecture, data quality, and auditing. The roadmap identified dependencies, implementation priorities, and a phased path toward improved data governance maturity and CMMC readiness, using the initial operating division as a model for potential broader adoption.
The engagement produced a comprehensive assessment and actionable transformation roadmap, giving the manufacturer a structured path toward stronger information governance and regulatory readiness. Mavendog's work established the program foundation and implementation priorities for subsequent modernization efforts.
